Tried Silver Stars back in 2002-2004 and got sick of replacing bulbs every 3-6 months. The HIR's are definately brighter than standard, and they're plug and play.The orignal HIR bulbs were built by General Electric and sold through Toshiba, where they first gained recognition for being extremely bright. While those original units have been discontinued, Philips continues to manufacture new ones that are better than the old ones.
