Jul 9, 2022 · YouTuber Ford Boss Me inspired me to make this video, as he theorized longer cranking times can mitigate (or totally prevent) the notorious 2nd gen 3.5L EcoBoost V6 startup rattle. I experimented with different cranking times consisting of approx. 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 seconds, and 1, 2, and 3 cranking sessions.In 2021, Ford issues the new recall and coded it 21B10. This is the recall to replace or repair noisy cam phasers. Actually, there is nothing bad in noise cam phasers but a lot of Ford owners reported these problems and waited that Ford would solve them immediately and free of charge. So, Ford decided to try and solve the issues.Not sure exactly how to test out of the engine. When the phaser is in the engine one can use a stethoscope (or other means) to listen for the sound. It is rather easy to hear if that is the case. Off the engine there may be wear marks that you can see. My 5.4l phasers will set me back about $90 each.The new cam phasers supposedly have resolved the issue with the new design but we also don’t have enough data on those or the gen 3 engines (same power train as the gen 2) to say for sure. Mine has had the phaser rattle for 10,000 miles. Tried everything, researched alot. Nothing quited the rattle. Stopped in to my dealership yesterday afternoon. My 2018 3.5 EcoBoost cam phasers failed at 14k miles, with oil changes every 4,500 - 5k. It got QSUD 5w-30 and/or Mobil 1 0w-30 (Mobil 1 was in at the time of failure). I don't think oil has anything to do with the phasers failing - it's a flawed design.The first generation Ford F-150 EcoBoost engines had problems with a timing chain that stretched too much and carbon buildup on the intake valves because of direct injection. Just had to do the timing chains in a 19 5.0 that turned out to be can phasers but went ahead and did the solenoids phasers and chains while I was in there. 80k miles on it. I assume if it's a Ford product that has cam phasers that they will be an issue.
