This a known bug caused by accepting Vilkas's Purity quest before Farkas. To resolve it accept and finish Farkas's Purity quest first and be sure that the quest giver is following you the whole way through. To avoid bugs on this quest. First speak to Vilkas. With Vilkas and Farkas, it's not so much about personalities, in fact, they're quite similar. But one is described and shown to be highly intelligent and thoughtful, while his brother is described and shown to be of lower than average intelligence - imo, it's almost like he's on a little child level. I think a lot of issues surrounding Vilkas's dialogue is that because he's a high ranking member/quest giver of the Companions his bouncing back and forth between nice and arse-hole responses stick out a little bit more because of the way the scripting works.
