May 23, 2018 · New here and trying to get a build sheet started for my truck. Have a 94 GMC 1500 Z71. Planning on SAS and turbo lq4 with 700ish flywheel hp. Have access to a 14 bolt already so question is will a stock 14 bolt hold up for a rear axle or should I just go with a Dana 80 and Dana 60 front. Planning on running between 37-40" tires if it matters.I don't think the 80 in the rear of Dodges, at least of that model year, were a true 80. I think they're considered a D80 "hybrid" in that they use an D80 center section (has either an 11.00" or a 11.25" ring gear, versus the 10.50" ring gear of the 70) and D70 tubes, shafts, outers, etc. That thing should, more or less, bolt in.The sterling has better axles, and the pinion support bearing on the 14 bolt goes to hell a lot doing what we do with ours (pulling). That said, you really can't go wrong with either in an off road setting. The current Dana has a 4.10 and the lowest numerical gear set for it is 3.54 where the 14 bolt can go down to a 3.21 gear. 60 MPH w/4.10 gears = 2755 rpm. 60 MPH w/3.54 gears = 2378 rpm--not really worth the trouble. 60 MPH w/3.21 gears = 2157 rpm--worth the trouble. 60 MPH in OD with 4.10 gears = 2066 rpm.Location. The dana 70 looks almost like a dana 60 except a tad bigger housing and thicker tubes. They were made in all types of configurations in all types of vehicles. From the smooth bottom 70-U to the 4in thick tubed 70-HD.i held up a dana 60 cover to my 14 bolt... there is only about 3/4 inch difference.. this difference would be a lot less on a dana 70 with all the extra material they have. of course, both axles can be ground for more clearance. I have never heard of any part of a 14 bolt or a dana 70 breaking.
