May 29, 2007 · In the past two decades, lofts have gotten stronger to help with distance from the higher hitting, game improvement irons. A 3 iron loft today would equate to almost a 1 iron from the 1950's and 60's. Club lengths have also changed - back then an average 5 iron measured 37.5 inches - standard length for PING is now 37.75" and 38" for Callaway.I bought the Ping Eye 2+ BeCu full set irons for $400 back in '97 (3-9,PW,SW). I didn't know much about golf back then, however, now i'm shooting in the 80's, I still like them. I dont get the distance much but I get the accuracy & feel I want. My dad has the Goldwin AVDPs. Pretty easy to hit with good distance.

You don't necessarily need to add 2", the more important measure than your height is your wrist-to-floor (WTF, no kidding) measurement.
